 大谷大学真宗総合研究所国際仏教研究では、下記の通り公開講演会を開催致します。
 講師のヤコブ・ザモルスキー氏は、真宗大谷派の浄土教フェローとして奨学金を受給し、大谷大学で博士論文のための研究を行ない、台湾の国立政治大学から学位を授与されたばかりの若手仏教研究者です。今回は、博士論文のための研究をもとに、曽我量深による法蔵菩薩=阿羅耶識論を東アジアの仏教思想史に位置づける内容でご発表です。

講題:Why do Pure Land Buddhists need Consciousness-only? “Modern doctrinal studies” of Jōdo Shinshū in the history of East Asian Buddhist thought  浄土の信者はなぜ唯識学を必要としているのか ─東アジア仏教思想史における「近代教学」 
梗概:The legacy of Soga Ryōjin 曽我量深 (1875-1971), the scholarly priest and modernist exegete affiliated with Ōtani branch of Jōdo Shinshū school, remains a contentious issue among contemporary believers and scholars of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism. A particularly controversial part of this legacy is Soga’s interpretation of the canonical narrative about practice and vows of bodhisattva Dharmākara (Hōzō法藏), the story which explains the genesis of Amitābha’s Western Pure Land. Soga repeatedly argued that the savior-like figure of Dharmākara should be construed in the light of elaborate theory of consciousness developed by Indian and Chinese scholiasts of the Consciousness-only (唯識) tradition. While his detractors have dismissed this idea as idiosyncratic and doctrinally unfounded, his continuators have touted it as a bold attempt to “demythologize” Dharmākara’s story, allegedly rejected by modern people as unbelievable and irrelevant to their existential concerns. In either case, the crucial problem raised by Soga – namely, whether and how Consciousness-only thought is relevant for Pure Land faith – has been most often discussed as an internal concern of his own denomination’s “theology” (shūgaku 宗学). In contrast with this approach, I would like to demonstrate how this particular issue was independently addressed in the works of modern Chinese Buddhists, such as Shen Shandeng 沈善登 (1830 – 1902), Yang Wenhui 楊文會 (1837-1911) or Tang Dayuan 唐大圓 (1890 [?] – 1941). I will argue that Chinese authors’ views on bodhisattva Dharmākara need to be considered against the backdrop of Buddhist tradition of scriptural exegesis, which harbored unresolved controversies and dilemmas related to interpretation of Pure Land myth. I would also like to discuss whether these examples may add any new insights to recent discussions of Soga’s Consciousness-only thought.
